Increasing Gender Diversity in the Auto Service Industry

In the past, I {worked well|proved helpful|performed} as a contracted {task|job} coordinator for {a Saint|a Street|a E}. Paul, MN-based non-profit. The project was based on a U. S. {Division|Section|Office} of Labor grant designed to move more women into male-dominated positions within the auto service industry. {The particular|The precise|The actual} positions we {concentrated|centered|targeted} on were auto service technician, aka mechanic, service advisers (write up the repair order), and parts {staff|personnel} (sell auto parts).

The project lasted 3 years and part of my role was to {discuss with|talk with} service managers at Twin Cities based {car|automobile|vehicle} dealerships to encourage them to recruit and {maintain|keep|preserve} women in the positions mentioned above. I have to {will was|be honest was} the most exciting project {I possess|I use|I've} {worked well|proved helpful|performed} on! The goals included increasing awareness of {professions|jobs|occupations} in the auto service industry, increasing enrollment and retention of the {quantity|amount} of females in {car|automobile|vehicle} service programs at local technical and community {schools|universities|educational institutions}, and increasing {the amount of|the quantity of} females working in nontraditional {functions|tasks|jobs} within the auto service industry.

Guidance through {Prediction|Bulletin|Admonition} Committee

We formed an advisory committee consisting of a representative from the local union, an apprenticeship representative, a female {car|automobile|vehicle} service technician, an {car|automobile|vehicle} service technician instructor, a representative from the local automobile dealers association, and the two of all of us working on the {task|job}. The purpose of the advisory committee was to provide guidance toward {achieving|attaining|getting} our goals and also to help troubleshoot and problem solve.

Gender Stereotypes

While some of the dealerships had a "token" woman with the male-dominated roles, many would not. One service manager with whom I met {believed to|thought to} me, "We hired {a lady|a female|women} once and she {did not|failed to|don't} work out. " {We were|I actually was|My spouse and i was} flabbergasted! It {shows up|looks} that he saw that "one" woman as {symbolizing|addressing|which represents} all women and because she didn't work away, there's no use {attempting|seeking|striving} another woman. Biting my tongue, I thought to myself, what about the men that didn't work out?

Inaugural Networking {Celebration|Function}

As part of the project, we coordinated a first of its kind networking event for women in the auto service industry. Invitations were {delivered|directed|dispatched} out to women working in the male-dominated {functions|tasks|jobs}. A notable female owner of a leading Minneapolis based auto dealership was the keynote speaker, {motivating|stimulating|pushing} the women attendees to continue following their {enthusiasm|interest|love}. Many of the {individuals|members} commented on what a great evening it was to be around other women in the field, as oftentimes {they might be|they could be|they are often} the only female at their dealership, with the {exclusion|exemption|different} of administrative staff.

{Profession|Job} Open House

Another event that we put {collectively was|jointly was|along was} obviously {a profession|a job} open house to provide female high school students the {possibility to} {find out more on|find out about} {professions|jobs|occupations} in the auto service industry. We collaborated with {a nearby|an area} technical {college or university|school} that provides an auto service program. Two graduates of the program spoke {of their|of the} experience working in the field. Attendees were given a tour of the department and took part in a hands-on activity that involved disassembling and reassembling a steering {element|part|aspect}.

Given a long lead, the other project {planner|manager} and i also were granted the freedom to "do what it takes" to meet our goals- {that have been|that were|which are} always met and often exceeded. I {wish|desire|expect} you can use {many of these} strategies for creating {consciousness|recognition|understanding} of your nontraditional CTE class or program.
